Pop-up Mosque

Prototype

Type
Prototype; temporary, portable, modular mosque

A place of prayer that folds into a truck and opens in minutes.

The Pop-up Mosque is a prototype. It is a small study in how a ritual can travel. It starts with a familiar scene. When events are organised, space for prayer is often left to the last minute. The set-up is poor. Prayer is not given the importance it is due. It is pushed to the edge of the day, when it should sit at its centre.

This design answers with a mosque that can be folded and unfolded within minutes. It lets worshippers fulfil their duties in any place, at any time.

Two elements

Small as it is, it keeps the main elements of a mosque. There is a shaded prayer room. There is a minaret, so the place of prayer can be seen from a distance.

The minaret does what it has always done. It marks the place before you arrive. Even a temporary mosque needs to be found.

Modular pieces

The structure is made of several modular pieces. They fit together easily. They come apart again just as easily. Then they travel in the back of a truck to the next place.

Two parts make the whole: the prayer room and the minaret. Each is drawn as a set of panels that lock together.

The drawings read like an instruction manual. Wall to roof. Wall to wall. Step by step. The building is not delivered finished. It is put together by the people who will use it.

Time

The mosque follows the community. It matches the mobility and spontaneity of how people meet and how they pray. It adapts to each community's needs and schedule, in space and in time.

It is temporary and portable. It stays as long as it is needed. Then it moves on.

Open

The design holds to an essence of Islamic worship: prayer woven into daily life, with a proper place to pray anywhere.

The structure is open. What happens beneath it is visible to passers-by, and welcoming. It gives a sense of enclosure, yet it has no physical boundaries. It sits lightly within what is already there.

Scale

Large enough to gather people in prayer. Small enough to fold away.

What it leaves behind is not a building. It is the memory of a place that appeared when it was needed, held people together for a while, and then was gone.

By reimagining the older, small-scale architecture, we can ignite the heart again to see the beauty of space.

brings you memories. We build them.
